About Us

The NW SILC is one of five schools in Leeds providing solely for pupils with Special Needs

There are some interesting, difficult and rewarding challenges involved in working with your children. Our staff are highly trained and committed to an ethos designed to promote a partnership approach to development of everyone involved - and that includes parents and staff as well as pupils.

We have buildings on three sites, as below. In addition we have pupils who, although they are on our roll, spend all or part of their time on a mainstream site - these are listed after our main sites.

Penny Field

This site caters for primary and secondary age pupils. They are predominately children and young people with the most profound and complex needs who require high levels of support.

Green Meadows - Bradford Road

We are developing this site as a centre of excellence for children with communication difficulties, including autism. In addition, this is also the site of The Meadows Early Education Centre, which also provides for pupils with special educational needs. There is a separate prospectus for ‘The Meadows Early Education Centre’ available on request.

Green Meadows - Back Lane

Back Lane is our secondary provision, catering for pupils who have a variety of learning difficulties. Pupils in Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11) follow both the ASDAN Youth Award and AQA schemes of work. A number of Year 11 pupils also take part in college ‘taster’ days. Post-16 pupils follow the ASDAN Certificate in Life Skills scheme of work and attend college for either a full or half day each week.

We also have several mainstream partnerships at the following schools. We are very proud to be associated with these schools and that so many of our pupils are able to learn alongside others of a similar age. Pupils in these partnerships remain on the SILCS roll and are primarily supported by SILC staff. These pupils access mainstream lessons, with the necessary support, for varying amounts of time depending on their learning needs. Base areas provide support and learning opportunities for these pupils at other times.
